Winooski
got a free public library on this day in 1908. A local resident
donated 500 volumes from the Girls' Club and the state donated
$100. After many weeks of hard work by the trustees, the library
opened in the new Tobey and Lockwood Block.
They
had 525 books, and the public loved it. The library was centrally
located and enjoyed instant success...so much so, in fact, that
merely three years later the collection totalled 2,500 books!
Today's
facility is known as the Winooski Memorial Library. After outgrowing
various locations, the library has occupied its own building on
East Spring Street since 1963.
