Alonzo
S. Church was born in Brattleboro on this day in 1793. He graduated
from Middlebury College in 1816, specializing in math. Church would
go on to become a professor of mathematics at the University of
Georgia.
After
ten years of teaching, he was appointed the University’s sixth
president. Church would serve as president for the next thirty years,
the longest term in the University’s history.
Various
problems between the student body and the faculty during his tenure,
led to faculty dissatisfaction and a decline in enrollment. Despite
that, the University grew physically, with classrooms and six new
buildings.

Photo of Brattleboro's Main Street. Notice what appears to be
a
smudge in the middle of the street; it is actually a wagon
in motion, but the camera shutter speed is too slow to
capture its definitive shape.
