The
Vermont Legislature promised to help older Vermont citizens pay
their bills on this day in 1935. The amount of financial help, according
to the law, would depend upon each case, but would be capped at
$30 per month for an individual or $45 per month for a couple.
The
act stipulated income restraints, and applicants had to have been
Vermont residents for at least ten years prior to applying. If the
criteria were met and the applicant was found to be in financial
need, the state would award aid.
Though
the law went into effect immediately, no checks were issued until
after July 1st.
