Oliver
and Susannah Luce arrived in Stowe, becoming Stowe’s first
settlers on this day in 1794.
Legend
has it that the Luces arrived in Waterbury with horses and a sleigh,
at which point the road became impassible. Luce and his wife continued
on horseback, carrying only some bedding and minimal supplies, in
order to become the first to settle in Stowe. They succeeded by
beating Captain Clement Moody, who also settled in Stowe, by a single
day.
The
Luces built a log cabin and their family grew. In fact, Oliver and
Susannah’s son, Harry, would be the first child born in Stowe.
