William
White began serving time at the county jail on this day in 1926.
He was found guilty of petit larceny the day before, but pleaded
for leniency. White had already served three months in jail waiting
for trial.
He
had broken into a camp in Calais and stolen a feather bed, two pillows,
two tin pails, a quilt and two lanterns. Apparently White needed
kitchen supplies, too, making off with cups, plates, saucers, knives,
forks, spoons, bowls, three platters and three pitchers. He also
took lamps, chairs and a cross-cut saw.
The
state argued for a lighter sentence due to family hardship and the
state’s need to support them.
