Francis
Hovey Stoddard was born in Middlebury on this day in 1847. Stoddard’s
passion for literature brought him to study at Oxford University
in England.
He
came to teach at New York University in 1888. NYU had just created
a Department of English Language and Literature. Stoddard became
Dean of the University College of Arts and Pure Science in 1910.
Throughout
his life, Stoddard was a prolific writer. He published more than
fifteen books, wrote countless articles and edited poetry and prose.
In an effort to promote higher education, Stoddard created a high
school visitation program for NYU faculty.
