The
town of Fairlee was voting on this day in 1776. Fifty-two proprietors
met to consider taxes. They knew the town of Fairlee needed to have
roads cut and cleared, and they also knew that in order to do this
they needed to raise money.
They
settled upon 257 pounds as a sufficient sum with which to begin,
and decided to assess taxes to raise that sum. Rates would include
a tax of three pounds on each original right, 6 shillings per meadow
lot, 6 shillings for each house lot, and 20 shillings per hundred
acre lot.
Most
of the money collected would go toward roads, but some was earmarked
for other expenses.
