People
came out in droves to Winooski on this day in 1928. Governor Weeks
addressed hundreds on the newly constructed bridge connecting Winooski
and Burlington. It was a celebration of its completion, and more
significantly, of recovery from the Flood of ’27.
The
Winooski River, like every other river in Vermont, had become a
raging torrent of water, wiping out this important transportation
link. A temporary bridge was put in place after the water receded.
Today’s
dedication by the governor, a mere ten months after total destruction,
was as much a psychological celebration as it was a physical one.

At
bottom right, the Flood of 1927 filled rivers and streams, overflowing
banks and tearing through buildings. This image shows the Winooski
River rushing
through the mill buildings after it had already destroyed the Burlington-Winooski
bridge.
