At
8:00 o’clock in the morning of this day in 1986, a young Barre
pilot crashed his plane into Mount Ethan Allen near Duxbury. He
was killed instantly.
William
A. Howrey was flying a twin engine Air Parcel Express plane. Visibility
was extremely poor due to dense morning fog. Howrey couldn’t
even see Mount Ethan Allen right in front of him, and he slammed
directly into it. He was only 23 years old.
A
ranger for The Green Mountain Club at the Duxbury cabin heard the
crash. After the fog lifted, four and a half hours later, a civilian
helicopter spotted the wreckage about 100 yards south of the Long
Trail.

Fog,
particularly in the morning, can be pervasive among the Green
Mountains. This photo proves that statement. Not only is the line
of trees in the distance difficult to see or patchy at best, but
there are mountains totally hidden that should be seen in the
entire top half of this photograph.
