The
towns of Norton, Averill, and Stanhope, Quebec were moving their
Anglican Church to Canada on this day in 1966. In earlier times,
St. Paul’s communicants overflowed the pews placing chairs
in the aisles, and some even had to stand outside.
Attendance
slipped during the 1900s. Parishioners finally decided it would
be better to give the church to the Dixville Home in Dixville, Quebec,
rather than shut it down and watch the building deteriorate.
The
church was moved four and a half miles, accompanied by Bell Telephone
and Hydro Quebec work crews, who cut and then repaired lines to
clear the way.
