The
common in Coventry was filled with people on this day in 1912. Men,
women and children came to hear speeches and see the new monument.
It
was the unveiling of a magnificent Civil War monument, donated to
the town by Judge Riley E. Wright, a Coventry native and Civil War
veteran. He gave it to the town, he explained, in hopes that it
would inspire interest and respect, and that it would stimulate
others to “emulate the patriotic deeds” of those who
risked or lost their lives so that “our country might live.”
Judge
Riley E. Wright was one of 125 dedicated men from Coventry that
served in the Civil War.

People
gather in Coventry for the dedication of a war memorial. They
covered the statue in an American flag, as shown here, until
the unveling. The monument still stands in Coventry's common today.
