A
grant for 23,040 acres to be called Swanton was chartered on August
17, 1763. This rich, fertile soil along the Missisquoi River was
hotly contested during the mid 1700s. French, English and Abenakis
all laid claim.
Monument
Road, just off route 7 in Swanton, provides a snapshot of area history,
beginning with a Vermont historical marker.
There’s
a stone memorial denoting the first church, a marker gifted to Swanton
during the tri-centennial of Lake Champlain’s discovery. At
its base is a small plaque, marking the 175th anniversary of Swanton’s
charter in 1938. An Abenaki Totem Pole stands witness to history
and this beautiful place.
