1781

As an industry goes, so goes the town. Changing times means a changing role for Elmore.

The town of Elmore got its charter on this day in 1781. The land had been granted to Samuel Elmore a year earlier, which is how the town got its name. It would take nearly a decade, however, before Elmore would see its first settlers. In 1791, Elmore had a whopping population of...12.

East Elmore thrived for many years on the lumber industry, but by the early 1900s, woodlands had been depleted and the industry virtually disappeared. East Elmore, which in its heydey boasted a post office, school, homes, mills, and a general store, disappeared too.

Today, Elmore is best known for Lake Elmore and the Elmore State Forest.
