The
first child born in Essex was born on this day in 1783, and, in
fact, there were two of them. Frances Hall and Clarissa Stevens
were both born on this day, and they were born so close together
that nobody’s sure who was the first child born in Essex.
Frances
Hall tends to get more credit as Essex’s first born because
her birth was recorded in the town clerk’s office and Clarissa
Stevens’ birth was not.
It
would be almost another five years before the first deaths would
occur in Essex and 12 years before the first marriage would be held
in town.
