1860

William Bullock Clark of Brattleboro spends his entire life leaving no stone unturned.



On December 15, 1860, William Bullock Clark was born in Brattleboro. He beame a scientist, specializing in geology and meteorology.

While getting his doctorate from the University of Munich, Clark studied in London and Berlin. He worked as a field surveyor with the geological surveys of Great Britain and Prussia.

Upon returning to the U.S., Clark began teaching in the geology department at Johns Hopkins. He headed up the United States Geological Survey.

Clark organized the Maryland weather service and the Maryland geological survey. During Clark’s tenure at Johns Hopkins, they award the nation’s first Ph.D. in meteorology, and the geology department grew dramatically.
