Lunenburg was holding a special meeting at Simeon Howe’s cabin
on this day in 1781. It had been just over three months since Lunenburg
had held its first town meeting, ever.
It
had been decided the town should have a local government and its
own elected officers. They voted to assess and collect taxes for
the development of the town, but they also voted to petition the
General Assembly, asking, where is the town line between Lunenburg
and neighboring Guildhall?
When
the line was finally established, it came as a quite the surprise
to find out that some of the Lunenburg town officers were, in fact,
residents of Guildhall.
