1910

An article in a New York newspaper peaks the interest of Vermonters. Preserving Vermont’s mountains...

The Rutland Herald re-printed an article run by the New York Sun on this day in 1910. The article celebrated the recent gift of Camel’s Hump to the state of Vermont by Joseph Battell. It took this article in a New York newspaper to spur some Vermonters to seek protection for Vermont’s highest peaks.

The Sun suggested that M.E. Wheeler of Rutland, owner of Killington, should follow Battell’s example and donate Killington. The Sun wanted Vermonters to push for action, and to take steps to preserve Mansfield, as well.

Interestingly, The Sun thought Jay was too far north. and excluded Lincoln because it had “no distinguishing features.”
