1754

This man would rather be Vermont’s governor than a U.S. Senator. The many roles of Isaac Tichenor.

Isaac Tichenor was born on this day in 1754. He would move to Bennington, opening up a law practice and becoming instrumental in Vermont’s early development.

Tichenor served in the state legislature and on the Vermont Supreme Court, including a stint as chief justice. He represented Vermont for admission to the Union and in establishing appropriate boundaries with New York.

Tichenor served as Vermont’s United States Senator for one year, but resigned when he was elected as Vermont’s governor. After 10 years as governor, Tichenor returned to the Senate, serving six more years. Tichenor is buried in Old Bennington.
