The Pavilion Hotel was re-opening in Montpelier on this day in 1876.
It was a new building, replacing the original Pavilion of 1807.
The
new, larger hotel catered to legislators, as well as locals and
out-of-town travelers with guest rooms and a popular tavern. As
a hotel, the Pavilion was sometimes referred to as “Vermont’s
Third House.”
Today’s
Pavilion still stands on Montpelier’s State Street, and although
it’s not the original 1876 building, the front and west side
are a reconstruction of the historic exterior. The Pavilion houses
state offices, including that of the governor, and is home to the
Vermont Historical Society’s museum.
