1919

Rutland County is up to its gills in fish...and, that’s a very good thing! Lots and lots of fish stories...

There was a fish story in The Bennington Evening Banner on this day in 1919. But, it turned out to be a believable fish story, letting readers know that the fish were biting during November and December, 1918.

The Banner was reporting “catch” figures for both Lake St. Catherine and Lake Bomoseen. Eleven tons of white fish were caught during the two month period. That translated into more than 21,000 fish caught, weighing in at an average of a little more than one pound per fish.

The Banner published statistics showing that harvesting an acre of water should produce as much food as harvesting an acre of land.
