1852

From resort hotels and groceries to land and Vermont education, this man has the golden touch.

On January 16, 1852, Horace Ward Bailey was born in Newbury. As a young man, he worked at resort hotels in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, before returning to Newbury Village to open a grocery store.

Bailey’s store was extraordinarily successful. He sold the business when he was only 38 years old, and began speculating on land and settling new estates in northern Vermont and New Hampshire.

Bailey also had a particular penchant for education, serving as superintendent of schools, a member of the county board of education and chairman of the school board.
