This man puts the NHL on ice to pursue his education, instead.
The story of John LeClair.

John LeClair was born in St. Albans on this day in 1969. He would go on to become the first native Vermonter to play in the NHL.

LeClair was drafted by the Canadiens after finishing his high school career at Bellows Free Academy, but he chose to wait on his NHL career, attending UVM on a full scholarship. LeClair and The Canadiens were ready four years later.

LeClair became the first American to score 50 goals in three consecutive seasons. He scored winning overtime goals in two Stanley Cup final games ...a first by any NHL player. The John LeClair Foundation provides grants to Vermont non-profits for children.
