Joel
Robinson recorded a payment of $1.33 in his ledger on this day in
1818. Joel ran Robinson’s Mill at Kent’s Corner in Calais,
where he milled lumber for a growing local community.
Today
he was being paid by William Robinson, who owed him a grand total
of $6.63. William, like many of Joel’s customers, paid his
debt by bartering labor and services. William’s $1.33 credit
represented two days work on Joel’s shed.
William’s
other payments included 50 cents for one day’s use of his
oxen and another 67 cents for one day of work. Joel Robinson was
a patient rural businessman, allowing William nearly a year to pay
off his debt.
The
Vermont Book Of Days photo of Joel Robinson's ledger. A very special
thanks to the Giacherio family for allowing us to film this artifact.
