Farmers
and gardeners throughout Vermont were scrambling on this day in
1918 because of a late-season frost. It had been an unusually cold
winter, but this was June 20th!
Despite
what the calendar said - Chelsea checked in at 27 degrees. Other
towns throughout Vermont had similar chills...Bloomfield, Northfield,
Somerset and St. Johnsbury all came in a single degree higher at
28, demonstrating that the widespread frost had touched communities
in the Northeast Kingdom, central Vermont and southern Vermont.
A
late season frost of this magnitude could be devastating to crops
and gardens.
