A
deed was issued to Israel Morey on this day in 1775. The deed was
from William Simpson, and transferred to Morey a proposed ferryboat
operation that would cross the Connecticut River.
The
ferry would connect Fairlee, Vermont and Orford, New Hampshire.
It would allow for easy transportation of horses, cattle, and carriages,
making it possible to transport people and goods between the two
riverfront towns. This ferry would open new trading markets for
both Vermont and New Hampshire.
Simpson’s
deed stipulated that Morey should pay ten pounds for the rights
to operate such a ferry.
