The first known English sermon was given in Vermont on this day in 1704. The Deerfield, Massachusetts Masacre had occurred five days earlier. Those not killed were taken hostage by the French and Indians northward into Vermont.
Among the captives were Reverend John Williams, his wife and five surviving children. Mrs. Williams was killed on the second day. On March 5th, the party rested and Reverend Williams was allowed to conduct a service.
At the mouth of what’s now known as the Williams River in Rockingham, Reverend Williams read to the gathering, taking his sermon from a Christian hymn.
