On
March 13, 1993, a nuclear-powered attack submarine was commissioned
by the U.S. Navy. It would be christened the USS Montpelier, the
third U.S. navy vessel to bear that name.
The
first USS Montpelier was built in Germany in 1912, and served as
a navy-operated army transport during World War I. The second Montpelier
was a light cruiser commissioned in 1942 to serve in World War II.
It had an outstanding record during the war, earning thirteen battle
stars.
The
USS Montpelier commissioned in 1993 is equipped with some of the
Navy’s most technologically sophisticated equipment, and has
won numerous efficiency awards.
