Andrew
Ellicott Douglass passed away at the age of 94 on this day in 1962.
Douglass, an archeologist and astronomer, had been born in Windsor.
Most
people know Douglass because of one particular scientific contribution
that he named dendrochronology.
Roughly translated, dendrochronology means the ringed dating of
trees.
Douglass
discovered a direct correlation between the number of tree rings
and the age and history of a tree and its geographic region. Analysis
could uncover patterns in climate, food supply, rainfall and weather,
while dating of the rings provided a rough diary of when the events
took place.

An old tree succumbs to the chainsaw, but the circles
of its trunk tell the story of a lifetime.
