1909

Helping to preserve Vermont’s history is the apple of this man’s eye.

On March 22, 1909, Sanford Witherell was born in Cornwall. He graduated from Middlebury College, and became a well-known apple orchardist in Shoreham.

Witherell also loved history, and worked diligently for the benefit of the Henry Sheldon Museum in Middlebury. The oldest, chartered, community-based museum in the U.S., the Henry Sheldon Museum has historical artifacts and exhibits for the public to enjoy. Witherell bequeathed the musuem two prized Sheldon Peck paintings.

Witherell was the recipient of a Vermont Public Service Award, acknowledging his work in Vermont agriculture and his devotion to Vermont history.
