New
York granted Windsor a charter on this day in 1772. Settlers were
afraid that their original charter, having been granted by New Hampshire,
might be void if New York’s claim to all land west of the
Connecticut was determined to be valid.
To
protect themselves, the settlers of Windsor petitioned New York
to grant them a patent for their land. New York finally did so,
but by 1772 most of the land in Windsor had passed from the original
petitioners to Nathan Stone.
It
was on this day that New York granted Stone another charter, making
it perfectly clear that Windsor was a New York town.

Windsor's slogan as "the birthplace of Vermont" seems
fitting
now, but in 1772 Windsor wanted to be part of New York.
