Athens
got its charter on this day in 1780. Throughout the winter of 1779
and 1780 men settled in the region now known as Athens, and began
holding meetings.
They
were persistent, and through those meetings they drafted and signed
a covenant and organized town leadership. These men requested of
Governor Thomas Chittenden a charter for their town.
Governor
Chittenden responded with a charter on May 3rd, recognizing Athens
property in favor of its current settlers, and stipulating public
land be appropriated for a minister and a school. The charter hangs
in the Athens Town Clerk’s office.
