1802

A newspaper enterprise with one goal in mind...to use the proceeds to buy a farm. The story of Luther Tucker.

On May 7, 1802, Luther Tucker was born in Brandon. He apprenticed to a printer in Middlebury by the age of 14. At 24 he moved to Rochester, New York and began a daily newspaper. It was the first daily in America west of Albany.

Tucker’s goal was to raise enough money to buy and operate his own farm. He had ideas to improve many farming methods, and thought that all farmers could benefit from communication and education.

He soon began another publication, the Genesee Farmer. Tucker’s advice and articles became renowned, and he became editor of The Cultivator, providing information to farmers until his death in 1873.
