1928

It’s a new place to govern and to gather. 12,000 people converge on city hall.

Burlington’s current City Hall opened to the public on this day in 1928. The well-known structure that stands at the corner of Church and Main Streets is the center of city government, and with the park in back, it often becomes the hub for downtown activity.

It is estimated that 12,000 people toured the new City Hall, admiring its marble steps and construction of granite, brick and slate. Some took note of the coat of arms over the Church Street entrance.

The beauty of the structure is more than just skin deep. The distinctive cupola atop Burlington City Hall houses a bell that “is of concert quality.” When it rings, it strikes a perfect E.
