Commerce
in Rutland wasn’t fairing so well on this first day of inspection
in 1911. The inspectors of weights and measures were in town to
insure fair and standard operating procedures, making sure people
got what they paid for. They were sorely disappointed.
Not
one of the measuring devices provided was determined to be legal.
The measuring bins they did locate didn’t indicate whether
they were for measuring dry or liquid materials, which would create
significant discrepancies in measured amounts.
Inspectors
made their results known, telling Rutland in no uncertain terms
that their system simply did not measure up.
