| The Vermont State Legislature approved
a new law regarding public education on this day in 1892.
Vermont had far too many schools. A single town could have any
number of districts, burdening each town with operating numerous
buildings.
The Legislature passed “An Act Relataing to Public Instruction.”
Although Vermont did need a large number of schools because of its
challenging rural geography, it was determined each town should
constitute a single district.
This reduced the need for so many buildings, and the law authorized
the closure and sale of those buildings deemed unnecessary.
