1958

A plane crash near Caspian Lake takes the life of a
home town boy. A military tragedy in Greensboro.

A National Guard plane crashed on this day in 1958. The plane crashed just north of Caspian Lake, and the fatality proved a bitter pill.

The pilot, 27 year old John Williamson, killed in the crash, was a local boy. Williamson lived in Greensboro, and to the delight of his community, would often fly through Greensboro skies while on his training flights.

Sometimes, in fact, Williamson would zip through the skies with a friend or neighbor riding in the passenger seat. Locals loved the opportunity to take to the skies and look down upon their own homes and villages.

On this day, fortunately, Williamson was flying alone.
