Ira Allen was writing a letter on this
day in 1796. He asked that his ship, the Olive Branch, be allowed
to continue to America.
He’d been away for some time, and was anxious to see his
family. He also desperately needed to deal with his finances.
The letter was to no avail. The British took Ira Allen to England
and his ship sat in the harbor. His cargo consisted of guns from
France. The British were escorting all ships with military supplies
to shore.
Ira Allen was doomed. In his absence, and hearing of his detention,
Allen’s creditors submitted excessive bills for the sole purpose
of increasing their own profits.
