1939

A block named for the local lawyer...and city
mayor who had it built, is lost to fire.

On November 24, 1939, the Gordon Block in Barre burned. The Gordon Block was located where Sidewalk Village stands today, and was built by John Gordon.

Gordon, who practiced law in Barre, built the block in the summer of 1891. The structure served as the location for his office, and as a three-story brick building measuring 42 by 100 feet, it provided ample room for retail, residential, and and additional office space.

Gordon would eventually become Barre’s mayor, and it was under Gordon’s aegis during which the city’s water system was constructed.

The Gordon Block was so damaged by the 1939 fire, that it was not rebuilt.
