Bradley Barlow Smalley was born in Jericho on this day in 1836.
His life centered upon political interests and public service.
Smalley
became a lawyer, and tutored under the guiding hand of his acclaimed
father. In 1861, he was appointed clerk of the United States courts
in Vermont, a position he held for 24 years, until President Cleveland
appointed him collector of customs. Smalley representated Burlington
in the Legislature.
His
legacy, however, was as a long-standing, dedicated member of the
Democratic party. Smalley, a member of the national executive committe
was repeatedly a delegate to the national conventions.
