Carlos Everett Conant was born in Cabot on this day in 1870. He
would become a scholar and linguist, teaching philology at Chicago
University, Indiana University and the University of Chattanooga.
Conant
worked for the government during the early 1900s, interpreting and
translating Spanish and Philippine languages in Manila. He also
translated parts of the Bible into the Philippine language.
The
New York Public Library currently holds some of his writings, notes
and photographs in their collections. Included are translations
of plays and poetry to English and religious essays in Spanish.
