1870

Carlos Everett Conant of Cabot is determined it won’t get lost in translation. We’ll inerpret his story.

Carlos Everett Conant was born in Cabot on this day in 1870. He would become a scholar and linguist, teaching philology at Chicago University, Indiana University and the University of Chattanooga.

Conant worked for the government during the early 1900s, interpreting and translating Spanish and Philippine languages in Manila. He also translated parts of the Bible into the Philippine language.

The New York Public Library currently holds some of his writings, notes and photographs in their collections. Included are translations of plays and poetry to English and religious essays in Spanish.
