| Hiram A. Kimball was born in Stockbridge
on this day in 1837.
The Vermont landscape is rich in stone. Miners have excavated and
quarried granite, slate and marble out of Vermont hillsides to be
used for sculpture and architecture around the world.
Kimball’s contribution would change the industry, particularly
marble. Mechanically inclined, Kimaball invented a saw that could
cut right through marble.
With the burgeoning Vermont Marble Company in Proctor, the saw
was a welcome improvement in efficiency. Kimball’s saw would
be modified, adapted and improved, but he held the original patent.

believed to be similar to the innovative invention of Hiram Kimball.
