Albert Clarke was born in Granville
on this day in 1840.
He would go on to become a well-known journalist and businessman.
Clarke studied law and then practiced in Montpelier before moving
to St. Albans.
He bought the Messenger as well as the Transcript newspapers, and
consolidated them. He later sold the paper and went to work for
the Boston Daily Advertiser.
Clarke would also work as editor and manager of the Rutland Herald,
but left after being elected secretary and executive officer of
the Home Market Club.
Under Clarke's direction, the Home Market Bulletin became
a leading economic journal in the world.
