| September 4, 1870 was a busy day,
like most days, at the Royalton Livery Stable.
During the 19th and early 20th century, the center of activity
in many Vermont towns was the livery stable. Livery stables provided
a good measure of the comings and goings within a community, and
provided various services.
They boarded horses for visitors, both short or long term, and
they also rented out horses and carriages for people wishing to
travel, similar to renting a car or taking a taxi today.
The ledger for the Royalton Livery Stable reflects transactions
for each day, with people traveling to Bethel and other towns around
the region.
