| On September 9, 1882, an obscure Vermont
short-line railroad was completed. Unfortunately, in a mere six
months it would be closed and dismantled.
The rail line ran from Sheldon Junction through East Franklin and
on into Canada, following the east shore of Lake Carmi. The line
was to provide a connector between the two existing major rail lines.
A station was built in East Franklin, but “legend has it
that only one train…[ever] operated over the line.”
The promoters were in financial trouble before the line was even
completed, so the line didn’t catch on because it never went
into full operation.

Depicted here is the portion of the line that ran along the east
side of Lake Carmi.
