1813

This Vermont born doctor turns out to be a cut above the rest.
He’s bringing surgery to whole new level.

Frank Hastings Hamilton was born in Wilmington on this day in 1813.

From his humble Vermont beginnings, Hamilton would become a leading authority on surgery. After receiving his medical degree, he taught at numerous universities.

Hamilton served as a military surgeon in the Civil War, attaining the rank of lieutenant-colonel and being appointed medical inspector.

He was instrumental in organizing the United States General Hospital in New York and wrote medical works that are still used for reference, today. Notably, Hamilton was one of the physicians who cared for President Garfield during his final days.
