1959

An old bridge is looking for a new home.
A journey from Branch Brook to the Titcomb property.

The Stoughton Bridge in Weathersfield was loaded onto a flatbed truck on this day in 1959. The deteriorated covered bridge, which for years crossed Branch Brook, was officially retired.

The Army Corps of Engineers planned to move the bridge to the Weathersfield Historical Society, but the bridge was so bad the historical society didn’t take it.

Townspeople sought a new home for this piece of Weathersfield’s history. Andrew Titcomb offered to have the bridge placed on his property in Perkinsville.

The Stoughton Bridge was successfully moved, arriving at its new location the next day.
