1861

Vermonters are committed to preserving the union during the Civil War.
A war story from Morristown.

The 5th Vermont Infantry left for the battle front on September 17, 1861. The infantry was comprised of ten companies of Vermont men.

Company D was established in 1861 as part of that 5th Infantry. It was comprised of 84 volunteers with nine of them coming from Morristown.

Throughout the Civil War, Vermont provided more men per capita than any other state.

Consider this...in 1860, Morristown had a population of 1,751 people. 168 Morristown men served at the front during the Civil War. That’s nearly ten percent of the town’s total population.
