Three men act in their town's best interest, only to be taken to court by another town. A pauper's story.

Holland was holding a special town meeting on this day in 1843.

The town was trying to decide if they would pay for the cost of a lawyer to defend John Mead, Joshua French and Warren Waterman. A lawsuit had been filed against the three men for helping a Holland town pauper to relocate.

It was in the best interest of Holland tax payers for the pauper to be moved, since local communities had to foot the bill for their poor. Unfortunately for Mead, French and Warren, they had relocated the pauper to Morgan.

Town officials and tax payers in Morgan sought court intervention because they didn't want the pauper in their town, either.
