This student of the world dedicates his life to teaching
and writing. We’ll go to Vernon for his story.

John Stebbins Lee was born in Vernon on this day in 1820. He would become a well-known teacher and scholar.

Lee first taught school in Guilford at only 18 years old. He then taught at schools and colleges in New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.

He was in charge of the Green Mountain Institute in South Woodstock for many years, and served as President of St. Lawrence University in New York.

Lee also took leave to travel, studying extensively in England, Europe, Egypt and the Holy Land. Lee wrote many works including “Nature and Art in the Old World” and “Sacred Cities,” and was well-known for his lectures.
